Literacy KC

Founded in 1985 and currently led by CEO Gillian Helm, Literacy KC is a non-profit organization that offers adults a welcoming community to improve their literacy skills, enhancing their quality of life and their families through practical skills-based programs.

Their mission is to advance literacy within the Kansas City metropolitan area through direct services, advocacy, and collaboration.

Each term, staff, tutors, volunteers, and instructors build a collaborative learning environment where adult students expand their reading, writing, math, and digital skills.

The personalized approach allows students to shape the instruction they receive and delivers a balanced curriculum, leading to improved literacy and life skills.

Their model is revolutionizing the way adult literacy education is delivered. Its qualified instructors teach a relevant, responsive, and level-appropriate curriculum.

The tutors are trained volunteers supporting the instructors and helping meet individual student needs. Lastly, each student identifies academic and personal goals, and instructors design lessons to help them meet them.

They offer seven programs: High School Equivalency Preparation Classes, English Language Learning, Workforce Development, AmeriCorps VISTA, Excel Adult High School, Digital Literacy, and the Let’s Read Family Reading Program.
