Sleepyhead Beds

Sleepyhead Beds was founded in 2010 by past executive director Monica Starr. Her experience working with foster youth families allowed her to see firsthand the need for beds in the KC area.

In their first year, they delivered 1,200 beds to KC area children. Today Sleepyhead Beds is run by executive director Gayle Terry Holmes and her staff. While the team is much bigger, the mission remains the same, improving the quality of life for children and their families by providing clean, reusable beds and bedding.

Since its inception, Sleepyhead Beds has delivered more than 25,000 donated, gently used, and recycled beds to Kansas City metro-area children needing a comfortable place to sleep. That has given Kansas City children more than 3 million nights of restful sleep! These beds are redistributed free of charge to families in need.

Sleepyhead Beds also focuses on environmental impact, keeping almost 900,000 pounds of beds out of landfills. That’s almost 1 million cubic feet of mattresses that we’ve kept out of landfills – enough to completely fill 5 Good Year Blimps, 11 Olympic swimming pools, and over five times as heavy as the Space Shuttle!

They are the only organization in Kansas City that is focused solely on providing the children of KC beds and bedding.
