Mike Meyer
Band of Angels (BOA) has provided thousands of instruments to children in need to be a part of the band or orchestra at school.
The main reason for this is the vision and generosity of Mike Meyer and his team. The best part of my initial coffee meeting with Mike was hearing the sheer excitement in his voice as he told the story of joining the family music business out of college and the why behind starting Band of Angels twelve years ago. Mike is an incredibly driven, passionate, and community-focused person.
Mike’s family business, Meyer Music, has been in business since 1966. Mike works in the business with his mom and dad, Ted and Betty, brother Tom, sister Mitzi, and now his son John. Meyer Music just celebrated its 55th anniversary on March 4th of this year.
Meyer Music is a retail music store focused on the family musician. They sell and rent pianos, band instruments, orchestra instruments, sheet music, and instrumental accessories and provide music lessons for all instruments. Through his work at Meyer Music, Mike saw that not every child in the school had the same chance to follow their passion for music because of the cost of instruments and lessons.
This discovery led to Mike, Meyer Music, and WDAF-TV FOX4 founding Band of Angels. Band of Angels collects musical instruments and provides them to children in need for free so that they can join band and orchestra programs. They have also provided over 350 scholarships for area children to attend summer music camps.
Any unrepairable instruments are repurposed to benefit their programs. One of the best ways to see these repurposed instruments is by coming to the best summer party in KC, Art that Blows, at the Abbott KC in July. In addition, local artists have repurposed the nonfunctional instruments into art pieces for the silent auction.
Mike has helped change the lives of so many children over the last 12 years, and I cannot wait to see what he and BOA can do in the future.
If you want to get more involved in BOA, volunteer, or donate, please contact Mike directly or visit their website.
